No, it was an averatec laptop that was stolen. But that would have been hyseterically funny.
All in all, it was interesting to track the laptop, find the IP addresses it was using, and otherwise provide that information to the Minneapolis Police. In all I gave them 26 pages of technical information and a 2 page cover letter explaining it.
It took less than 12 days for them to get the subpeonas and execute the search warrant. I am happy, my wife is ecstatic and I'm amazed that this story is as big as it is.
James, It seems quite fitting that this story got to be big news. I think it's safe to say that those of us who love tech hate it when technology is taken away from its rightful owners. Reading about how you used technology to get your wife's computer back (nothing short of brilliant, IMHO) just made me feel GOOD. You thwarted the bad guy(s), and, well, I'm really at a loss to say just how cool I found your investigative method. Thank you!
